Easy Homemade Carp Baits For Big
Fish And Saving Money
by: Tim Richardson
We fishermen pay lots of money
for readymade fishing baits! The fact is that if they were so wonderful,
companies would not have to keep on offering new baits all the time! Just
the same number of fish or more, can be caught as a result of making your
own unique baits and this will save you bags of money too!
Having a unique bait is one of the greatest competitive advantages in
fishing. This is very often the factor which tips fish over from the state
of just testing a bait, to actually taking it into its mouth along with
your hook, and giving a very desirable run. There is no doubt in my mind
after over 3 decades of making homemade fishing baits, that they can
compete against commercial readymade baits on any water or venue.
You just need to fish sensibly and thoughtfully as you would normally for
any big wary fish in order to be consistently successful. There is such a
special and unique thrill and great sense of satisfaction when you catch
fish, especially big fish like carp, catfish, bass, tench or even pike on
your own homemade bait. One crucially important point about homemade baits
is that you have no chance of anyone ruining your own chances by also
fishing using your bait.
This is a point lost on most readymade bait users! The great edge of bait
is being different to ones fish wary of already as a result of previous
hooking and captures on it. So make your baits as unique as possible as
frequently as you think your results indicate you may need to.
Homemade baits often succeed far longer than many readymade baits purely
because you are the only one using that particular bait! Baits for carp
are often termed ‘attractor baits’ or food baits depending on their
nutritional value to the fish biologically speaking. High flavour levels
and high concentrations if used are sometimes an indicator of a bait being
more of an instant attractor type of bait much more than a food or
nutritionally stimulating oriented bait.
Often just because a bait is new means it will achieve more success than
established baits. Some bait makers use very economical ingredients for
cheap mass baiting and their baits will usually contain high levels of
flavors. Often these work well because the flavor pH affects the water in
certain ways, which fish can easily detect, so drawing more attention to
your bait, it being the source of the unusual signal.
Other homemade baits work by stimulating fish receptor cells very directly
using very highly nutritionally stimulating ingredients. Some baits
leverage naturally nutritionally stimulating ingredients to a far greater
extent than any flavors. Protein based baits can often impact on fish
receptor cells powerfully and induce a strong natural feeding response.
The variations on homemade baits with both long term and instant
properties are limitless; from the simplest to the most complex and these
all catch fish with a variety of success!
It might sound hard, but making baits that work is easy and your baits do
not need to be perfect like commercially produced machine rolled round or
barrel shaped boilies or pellets shapes etc. There are obviously very many
methods of making baits and you do not need to follow conventional steps
at all, in fact there are many steps you can leave out completely. This
makes things very much easier, saves hours of time and take the least
effort possible!
You do not have to make individual baits in round shapes. Why not roll out
a bait paste made of eggs, liquid additives and dry powders made into a
dough and simply cut this into little odd shaped pieces? You could pop
these into a pan of boiling water for about a minute or so to make
boilies.
Making baits is very easy. You merely need a large container to mix your
ingredients in and a knife or spoon to mix the materials to form a
practical bait dough. First just get a handful of eggs and a teaspoonful
of cake sweetener water mix together well.
Alcohol based flavours are better than propylene glycol solvent based ones
for longer term baits. Add some dry powders bit by bit to form a your
dough so it is not too sticky before it gets too stiff. The choice of
powders, meals or crushed, milled, liquidised or other forms of
ingredients you might wish to add to your bait for many various purposes
number well into the thousands, but only 2 ingredients can get you
catching!
Even wheat flour and water or bread and water is good enough at the very
basic level. You can add a flavor and a sweetener and even an appetite
stimulator if you wish but these are not essential to catch fish. In fact
you will find these are integral parts of many food ingredients you might
use in baits. Often using 5 to 20 drops of an essential oil is very
effective and I rarely make baits without these natural substances.
When your dough is ready you can use it immediately, or put it labelled
plastic bags for later use. Store baits in the fridge or freeze them. It
is best to make a note of the ingredients and levels in each individual
bait mix. To make around a kilogram of bait it takes about 6 eggs with
your dry powders. But this is a very rough guide and every mix can vary
widely depending on ingredients, their solubility etc.
What is the price of a bag of bait today and is it cheap or expensive?
Well it is certainly not getting any cheaper. Having the knowledge to be
able to consistently make homemade baits for a mere 3 pounds or 6 dollars
per kilogram, instead of 12 pounds or 24 dollars is stunning. Just think
of the saving on 10 kilograms costing 120 pounds or 220 dollars! (90
pounds or 180 dollars is a giant saving and is literally homemade made
money!)
The best advantage of all is you can make your baits as different to
normal as you like. Remember, being different is what really counts. Most
frequently it is the most different and alternative baits which tempt the
very biggest and wariest of fish and that means leading the fashion NOT
following it! You can start off with the simple bait ideas here - but you

big-time!
