Blackfish
Lodge, founded in 1989, is a charming fly-in or boat-in floating
lodge located in Canada, within the Great Bear Rainforest, one of
the largest remaining tracts of unspoiled temperate rainforest left
in the world. The area is strewn with rivers and streams abundant
with salmon and trout providing food for the magnificent orcas,
eagles, black bears and grizzlies and are just waiting to be caught
by you.
With the best British Columbia salmon fishing on offer, this means
opportunities for fly fishing, spinning and casting techniques for
all anglers, from beginners to experts.
There are
no pre-set fishing hours on your guided fishing trip and we fish
each day as conditions and your preferences guide us. Chris and
Hannah Bennett, your congenial hosts and owners, are year-round
residents of the lodge and will treat you to great food and
hospitality during your visit. |

Individuals, groups of friends, business groups, and families are
welcomed. Accessible by boat or floatplane, only, Blackfish Lodge is
truly a place of seclusion, quiet, and contemplation.
So whether you are fly fishing for salmon, trout, or steelhead in a
secluded Canadian river, lake, or stream, fishing for trophy salmon
in the protected waters of the surrounding islands, sightseeing, or
going whale-watching or bird-watching, Blackfish Lodge’s dedication
and over 20 years experience ensure that you will have a truly
enjoyable and successful stay. For quality wilderness angling,
there’s no better place for fishing, nature watching, and
congeniality than Blackfish Lodge. |

The Lodge
In 1988, Chris Bennett decided to fulfil the dream of owning his own
British Columbia fishing lodge. For folks wanting a great Canada
fishing lodge vacation, he designed and built a solid floating
structure that would provide a cosy, personal, and comfortable place
for his guests to visit.
Using red and yellow cedar from the nearby forests, Chris and local
craftsmen milled the lumber on site and worked together to build
Blackfish Lodge. The lodge is cosily heated by a woodstove and has
solar power and a generator to provide electricity (we turn the
generator off for sleeping). There is no TV, but wireless internet
access is provided. Each private room has two beds and its own
shower-equipped bathroom. There is also a kitchen, dining area, and
a modest living room, all with spectacular views. We have an widely
varied collection of CD’s, and an upright piano for those who like
music during their time at the lodge. You’re also welcome to bring
your own music (CD or cassette tapes) to set the mood of your trip.
Finally, the lodge is wheelchair accessible.
Quality Food & Drink
We believe that providing ample, high quality, and delicious food
adds to the overall pleasure of your visit. Meals are served and
cooked family-style. Our cooks will delight you with both the
quality and quantity of food. Of course, we have famous British
Columbia seafood delicacies: fresh crab, prawns, salmon and halibut.
Dependable refrigeration and good access to fresh produce ensure
both variety and quality of meat and produce. So, you may find
homemade soup, prime rib, lamb, fresh salads, pasta, and vegetables
on any given night. We also do much of our own baking. Award winning
Okanogan Valley and imported wines, beer, and other beverages are
also provided. |

If
you’re going to be out on an all day salmon or fly fishing trip,
we’ll make sure that there is a generous supply of food and hot and
cold drinks on the boat. You can certainly request any preferred
foods in advance of your visit. We will also be able to accommodate
most dietary restrictions. Again, just let us know in advance or by
filling out our guest preferences worksheet.

Superb Uncrowded Fly Fishing
Blackfish Lodge is licensed and insured for all freshwater fishing
and your British Columbia fly-fishing trip will be full of variety.
For the best time to fish see our
website for a month-by month description of our
season.
Great Variety of Water
Our 100% catch and release streams, lakes, and rivers are, indeed,
some of the most beautiful, productive, and unpressured waters
you’ve never heard of. Fish small streams or bigger water, dry
flies, or wet. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find yourself
hooking summer or winter run steelhead, cutthroat trout, dolly
varden char, a few rainbow trout, and chinook, silver, and pink
salmon.

|
Experts and Novices are Welcome
We have water and fishing opportunities to satisfy experienced and
novice anglers alike and we are very pleased to provide fly tying
and casting instruction to first timers anglers. We’ll teach casting
basics and have you (if you wish) tie a fly or two
Small
Streams
Our guides will take you into lovely small streams where the
sighting of another angler would be an extraordinary event. Want a
real challenge? Bring your 10 weight gear, fast sink tip line,
a strong arm, and hook a 20-60 pound Chinook salmon in a stream on a
stripped fly. Landing that fish, however, is quite another matter.
Gorgeous Wakeman River Float & Fish Trip
The Wakeman River is designated as Class 2 Classified Waters by the
B.C. government and we are one of only two lodges authorized to fish
the spectacularly beautiful and legendary Wakeman, often noted as
the highlight of our guests´ trip.
You and your guide will serenely raft your way down the river,
fishing innumerable pools and runs. After hooking your fill of
steelhead, salmon, trout, or dollies, (depending on the season)
you’ll come back to the lodge for another great dinner.
Saltwater Fly-Fishing
Saltwater fly-fishing for sea run cutthroats and salmon in the
estuaries and rock piles can stir up some non-stop action. The
estuaries can also produce some excellent fishing for silvers
waiting to enter the streams. Further, silvers can be fished in
other saltwater areas around kelp beds and tidal rips.
Fly-In
Fishing
Floatplane and/or helicopter charters can be arranged to fish nearby
pristine and rarely fished lakes and streams. |
|
Great Saltwater Fishing
Millions of migrating salmon go through the bottleneck of British
Columbia’s Inside Passage, and Blackfish Lodge is situated to take
full advantage of the presence of these fish. Trolling is the method
of choice and, year after year, our guests really appreciate how
consistent our fishing remains. Our area is also home to some
excellent BC halibut fishing—some spots are within just a few
minutes of the lodge. Our largest halibut, which was landed in the
2005 season. topped out at 200 pounds!
For the best time for salmon fishing or BC halibut fishing see our
website for a month-by month description of our
season.
Variety of Species
In addition to all types of Pacific salmon (chinook, coho, pink,
sockeye, and chum), the area also produces large halibut, ling cod,
snapper, and a variety of other saltwater species.

Generous Catch Limits
Generally, the catch limit has been four salmon per day of which two
may be Chinook. We encourage our guests to practice conservation and
keep only as many fish as you’ll want to eat. You are allowed to
take home a total of eight salmon per person. Of these eight salmon,
you can keep a maximum of four Chinook. The other four can be a
combination of any other of the species. In order to protect some BC
fish stocks, retention of wild coho have been limited, but for
several years regulations have allowed for retention of one hatchery
coho and one wild coho. Currently, the halibut limit is two fish per
guest.
Bringing some salmon home?
Your catch will be cleaned, refrigerated or frozen, and kept in
heavy plastic bags. As most of our guests depart via floatplane,
space limitations do not permit boxing your fish at the lodge. We do
not have access to smoking or canning facilities nor do Fisheries
and Oceans Canada allow us to do much in the way of preparation. If
your trip home is via floatplane, your fish will usually ride home
in storage wells located in the floats of the airplane. There are
facilities in both Campbell River and at Kenmore Air who will assist
you in packaging your fish for airline or surface transport to your
home. |

Fly
Fishing
For our guests´ use, we feature fly rods and reels from G. Loomis
and Sage . However, we do find that most fly fishermen prefer to
bring their own gear.
Saltwater Fishing
The lodge
has standard BC salmon fishing and halibut gear for all guests. Our
typical setup is a 9’ mooching rod with a single action (a.k.a. “knucklebuster”)
reel. However, if you have a favourite fishing setup, you’re welcome
to bring it along.
See our
website “What You’ll Need” section for
further details.

Spinning and Casting
All of our streams, rivers and lakes are fishable using spinning
and/or casting gear. Steelhead fishing, trout fishing, salmon
fishing, and dolly varden fishing are all very productive. All fish
respond extremely well to a cast lure. Equipped with single,
barbless hooks, different varieties of spinners and spoons can
provide incredible action.
Our freshwater fishing spots are located from a 20-50 minute boat
ride from the lodge. Some of these spots require short to moderate
hikes, so guests should have the appropriate physical mobility
necessary to reach these locations. Blackfish Lodge is licensed and
insured for all freshwater fishing.

Steelhead
We regularly float-fish both small streams and rivers for steelhead
using Ambassadeur-type casting reels. A free spooling level wind
casting reel is a particularly effective technique for these
extraordinary fish. If you haven’t cast with one of these setups,
it’ll take a bit of practice, but the reward will be great.
Excellent Trout and Dolly Varden Fishing
Our region is home to native coastal cutthroat trout and some
rainbows. The cutthroat can live as a resident variety in the
freshwater or as the searun variety. Trout, salmon, and dollies will
take a spinner or spoon aggressively. A #2 or #3 Mepps or
Roostertail type spinner or a medium to medium-small spoon will work
well.
Exciting Freshwater Salmon
The silver salmon runs in both the small streams and Wakeman River
and can provide some of the most exciting, fish-till-your
arms-fall-off, fishing you’ve ever had. In July, you can also hook
chinook salmon in the Wakeman and tributaries on a larger spoon or
spinner. These fish can be huge, so you may want to bring a reel
filled with a lot of 25 or 30 pound test. |
