Fishing in Orkney Scotland

Free Fishing

There is no permit required to fish on the majority of the Orkney lochs. Orkney's brown trout fishing is some of the finest in Britain and is renowned worldwide for the quality of their wild brown trout. Sea trout can be caught in the shallow sea bays on the east of the Orkney coastline around Mainland, Hoy and Scapa Flow. The main lochs are Harray, Swannay, Boardhouse, Hundland, Stenness, Skaill and Kirbister.

The main trout lochs on mainland Orkney are managed by the Orkney Trout Fishing Association. The Orkney Trout Fishing Association is a non profit making body dedicated to the enhancement of game fishing throughout the Orkney Islands. Since the 1980s OTFA has also worked on re stocking lochs on the smaller Isles such as Bea, North and Roos on Sanday, Swartmill on Westray, and Meikle Water on Stronsay.

OTFA's work is carried out for the benefit of both local and visiting fishermen, restocking the lochs and maintaining the facilities such as toilets, shelters, boat-launching, piers and car parking. OTFA also provides guidance on conditions, tactics and recommended flies to use, in their comprehensive brochure, which can be obtained direct from OTFA via their website at www.orkneytroutfishing.co.uk Visiting fishermen can support The Orkney Trout Fishing Association and show their appreciation for their work by taking out a very affordable subscription to the Association.
