River Blackwater
This river and lake system drains a catchment of 34 sq. miles and is
10 miles long from source to sea. It gets a run of 1500 Salmon and
Grilse approximately every year. It also has a run of Sea-Trout that
head for lough Brin at the headwaters of the system. Access
throughout this river is excellent. There are two boats available on
Lough Brin.
Rivers Laune, Flesk and Killarney Lakes
system
This a large Salmonid habitat which drains a catchment of some 320
sq. miles. It gets excellent runs of Salmon and Grilse, its
Sea-Trout fishing while good is primarily confined to the River
Laune. The lakes and rivers of this system have very good
populations of reasonably sized Brown Trout that accept fly eagerly.
Large Ferox Brown Trout can be caught on Lough Leane by trolling
large artificial baits. Access is good throughout and boats and
guides available.
Rivers Laune, Flesk and River Maine
This medium/large river drains a catchment of 154 sq.mls. Access is
poor throughout this system and there is no management plan in
place, which can be a challenge for the angler that desires wild
fisheries. This river gets a good late run of Salmon and Grilse and
a good run of sizeable Sea-Trout all through the season.
NB. The Brown Flesk can be accessed from our property.
Waterville lakes and river systems
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are
regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the
country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and
guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout
caught here are renowned for their size and quantity.
Shore angling
Without doubt the South West is renowned as a classic shore angling
destination. With its sweeping sandy beaches and rugged outcrops all
sea anglers are catered for.
When here you should try fly fishing for bass, Pollock and mackerel
which is great sport on light tackle. Angling guides are available
in most areas and their knowledge is invaluable.
Charter Boat Angling
Charter boat angling is readily available and well organised in the
South West and offers an exciting day out for all ages. Boat prices
vary from €300 to €500 plus per day or from about €50 per person per
day. Fifty percent of the nation’s charter fleet is situated in the
Cork and Kerry regions so there is plenty of choice. All skippers
are very knowledgeable and usually have the latest fish finding
technology on board. Travelling to the fishing marks can also be
rewarding as you can often see some of the many ancient settlements
scattered around our coast and islands and of course different
species of sea birds. |
